With the population of only 1400 people, Kanadi Borgaon is a small village in Latur Taluka. This village has 9 bachat groups with more than 100 women working in it. All these women came together to see that justice was given to the victim. Such is the glorious story…………..
Around 10 a.m that day, Satyabhama Kshirsagar, a member of village development committee was roaming for collection of money. As she approached a house, she saw smoke emerging from it which made her stop there. The next moment, she heard screams coming from that house . She immediately called other women to help her but by that time, Sarita, the victim was badly burnt. Sarita was tied and gagged. When Satyabhama ran for her help, the gag fell down from her mouth. All the women helped in extinguishing the fire and called her parents. She was burnt more than 50%. The police were called upon and Sarita was hospitalized in Ambejogai. Doctors did their best to save her but alas! Everything was fruitless as Sarita expired soon after. Whether it was an accident or deliberate attempt was unknown as her Mother-in-law and sister-in-law blamed Sarita herself for it. But crime can never be hidden, truth finally wins! Sarita’s dying statement proved that she was burnt alive by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Both of them were arrested. Truth being revealed through investigations they were finally punished and sent to jail.
Inspite of their own personal problems , Satyabhama and the other women keep on doing this good work. These women from Borgaon have brought a ban on liquor, fight for society rights. Many houses in village have been destroyed because of alcohol and gambling. Imitating the elders the young generation too has started drinking alcohol by selling off their valuables. It’s always the same scenario in the villages, the women work hard for their livelihood and men spend the money on gambling. No amount of persuasion could improve them. The women were so harried that they rallied together and threw about their gambling game. Seeing the feisty women, no man had the guts to stop them.
Women from Bachat group were also trained against child-marriage and dowry. There happened to be an incident of child-marriage which these women stopped. The girl was just 13 years old and her parents were adamant to marry her off early. With the timely help of the police, Kshirsagar finally managed to convince the parents otherwise and saved the girl. Thus, under the guidance of village development committee the women plan to fight injustice in every way possible!
